BroadBand Light (BBL) is a technology used in cosmetic and medical settings for various skin treatments, including addressing age spots (also known as sunspots or liver spots). BroadBand Light is a form of intense pulsed light therapy that delivers light energy to the skin. It’s important to note that BroadBand Light is not laser therapy. BroadBand Light targets specific chromophores (color pigments) in the skin, such as melanin (responsible for the color of age spots), hemoglobin (responsible for the color of blood vessels), and water.
When treating age spots, BBL works by emitting short bursts of light that are absorbed by the melanin in the pigmented areas. This causes selective photothermolysis, meaning the light energy is converted into heat energy that damages the melanin-containing cells responsible for the age spots while leaving the surrounding tissues largely unaffected. The body’s natural healing processes then remove these damaged cells over time.

Consultation
Before the treatment, a qualified healthcare provider or a licensed aesthetician will assess your skin and discuss your medical history to ensure you are a suitable candidate for BroadBand Light treatment.
Eye Protection
Once you’ve had your consultation and ironed out a treatment plan, you’ll have your first session. Because BroadBand Light uses high-intensity light, you will need eye protection. You will be given the proper eye protection before your session starts.
Post Treatment Care
After the procedure, you may experience some mild redness and swelling in the treated area. The skin may also appear darker temporarily as the damaged melanin rises to the skin’s surface. Over the following days and weeks, the age spots will gradually fade as the damaged cells are eliminated and replaced by new, healthy skin.
It’s essential to follow post-treatment instructions provided by the healthcare provider, such as avoiding sun exposure and using sunscreen to protect the treated skin during the healing process.
