Skincare treatments need to be tailored according to a patient's skin tone, especially with darker complexions that contain more melanin. At Rendon Center, we work to close the treatment gap in skincare to serve all skin types. Dr. Chere Lucas Anthony is a woman of color and a dermatologist who specializes in black skin.

Common Concerns We Address

We understand that traditional treatments skin require adjustment for skin with higher melanin pigmentation. Rendon Center has specialized knowledge and experience with African American patients, tailoring our treatments for the following skin concerns:

  • Exogenous ochronosis: Exogenous ochronosis is a rare cutaneous skin disorder that causes a bruise-like blue-black skin pigmentation on the face.
  • Acne: Acne can trigger a release of melanin on black skin, causing dark marks and scarring.
  • Keloid scars: Keloids occur when the body heals abnormally from a cut, burn or acne and can cause scarring.
  • Seborrheic keratosis: Seborrheic keratosis is a benign skin growth that can appear dark brown, purple, gray or black on darker complexions.
  • Psoriasis: Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes inflamed plaques, appearing dark brown, purple or gray on dark skin.
  • Eczema: Eczema is a dry, itchy and scaly skin condition that appears dark brown, gray or purple on darker skin tones.
  • Melasma: Melasma is a prevalent skin condition in African American patients, causing dark skin patches to develop on the face and upper body.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): PIH causes tan, brown or purple macules to form following infections, acne, injuries, eczema and psoriasis.
  • Dermatosis papulose nigra (DPN): DPN is more likely to develop on darker skin tones, causing small raised bumps or moles to form on the face, neck or upper torso.
  • Vitiligo: Vitiligo is a skin pigmentation disorder where milky white skin patches form in areas where skin cells have been destroyed.
  • Shingles: Shingles is a viral infection that causes a rash or blisters to form on the skin. On dark skin, they appear pink, gray, purple or brown.
