What Is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a professional dermatologic treatment that removes the outermost layers of the skin. By triggering the body to slough off dead and damaged skin cells, a chemical peel encourages the acceleration of skin cell regeneration. This leads to smoother, brighter, healthier tissue.

At the Rendon Center in Boca Raton, we pride ourselves in only using the highest quality products to deliver fast, effective results for our patients. Our skin health experts work directly with you to understand your specific concerns and develop a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

What Do Chemical Peels Do?

Chemical peels help to remove old, damaged skin and promote skin cell regeneration. Different chemical peel formulations will provide different results depending on the strength of the peel and the depth of penetration.

Chemical peels are categorized into three main types based on their depth of penetration and intensity:

  • Superficial Peels: Also known as light peels, these target the outermost layer of the skin and are effective for mild skin discoloration and rough texture.
  • Medium Peels: These peels penetrate the middle layers of the skin, addressing more significant skin concerns such as age spots, fine lines, and moderate discoloration.
  • Deep Peels: Targeting the deeper layers of the skin, these peels are used for more severe skin issues such as deep wrinkles, scars, and precancerous growths.

Our team exclusively uses VI peels and PRX peels to improve the health and appearance of your skin.

A VI Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that combines a blend of powerful ingredients to improve the tone, texture, and clarity of the skin. This unique formulation helps to exfoliate the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation, and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. The VI Peel is suitable for all skin types and requires minimal downtime, making it a popular choice for those seeking significant skin rejuvenation with relatively quick recovery.

A PRX chemical peel combines the benefits of a chemical peel with skin biorevitalization. The PRX peel is suitable for all skin types, has minimal downtime, and can be used year-round. Unlike traditional peels, the PRX peel penetrates the dermis without causing visible exfoliation of the epidermis. This stimulates collagen production and promotes skin regeneration, resulting in improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, and a more even skin tone.

What Are Chemical Peels Used For?

Chemical peels are a versatile, customizable treatment for a wide range of skin concerns. These include:

  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation caused by melasma
  • Textural irregularities
  • Acne scarring
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

In some cases, chemical peels may also help to reduce the occurrence of moderate to severe acne breakouts by helping to balance the skin's natural oil production, clear clogged pores, and remove excess debris from the skin.

What Are the Benefits of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peel treatments are convenient and cost-effective. Because each treatment can be customized, there is potential to address a wide range of concerns without using aggressive resurfacing techniques. Our patients appreciate that they can undergo chemical peels within their preferences for downtime, results, and budget.

How Long Do Chemical Peels Last?

The chemical peel treatment itself typically takes an hour or less. How long the results of a peel last depends on several factors. These include the strength of the peel selected and the severity of the dermatologic problem.

Generally, a light chemical peel achieves results that last 1 to 2 months. A medium peel may improve the skin’s appearance for up to 6 months. Deep chemical peels remove several layers of skin and achieve results that can last years.

How Many Chemical Peels Until I See Results?

The number of chemical peels a person needs depends on similar factors as listed above. More severe discoloration and aging may be reduced with one deep chemical peel. Two or more medium peels may be needed to achieve the same results, and several light peels would be needed to correct severe discoloration or scarring.

It is important to us that our patients achieve their desired outcome from treatment. We conduct a thorough consultation during which we do our best to estimate the number of chemical peels it may take to achieve each person’s goals.

How Often Can I Have a Chemical Peel?

The frequency of chemical peel treatments depends on the intensity of each. Deep peels may only need to be conducted once. Medium peels may be performed every 3 to 6 months. Light chemical peels can be performed monthly.

Are There Different Types of Peels?

There are several different types of peels that range in intensity based on the chemicals contained in their formulation. The wide variety of peels allows patients more control over their results and their desired downtime after treatment.

Can I Wear Makeup After a Chemical Peel?

Skin is much more vulnerable after a chemical peel so caution should be used. Makeup should not be applied when the skin is still flaking or peeling. For some patients, this ends within 24 hours. Depending on the depth of the peel and the skin’s response to treatment, makeup may need to be avoided for 7 to 10 days or more. If you are unsure about when it is acceptable to apply makeup, contact our office for guidance.

Side Effects of Chemical Peel Treatment

Redness may occur as a side effect of chemical peel treatment. Severity depends on the depth of the peel and also the skin’s natural sensitivity. Generally, light peels cause minimal redness that subsides within 24 hours. A few days may be needed to overcome redness after a medium peel, and deep peels may trigger several days of redness, peeling, and other side effects.

Will I Need to Avoid the Sun After a Chemical Peel?

The ultraviolet light in sunshine is very damaging to the skin. It is very important to protect newly-formed skin cells from this damage. This is true not only immediately after a chemical peel but for the years that follow.

Exposing the skin to sunlight or tanning beds can degrade the improvements that are achieved with chemical peel treatment.
