We have all heard the piece of advice “you cannot hide from your problems.” If your problem is spider or varicose veins, you are likely trying to hide them. They are both unsightly and can cause embarrassment. Sclerotherapy can treat your spider or varicose veins, eliminating the need to hide them.
What is sclerotherapy?
This is a minimally invasive way of treating spider and varicose veins. It requires no hospital stay and there is no downtime. Most patients can resume their normal activities the same day they are treated.
The treatment requires the practitioner at the Rendon Center to inject a sclerosing agent in the affected vessels using an extremely fine needle. The sclerosing agent damages the wall of the vein causing it to close off, which results in the blood being rerouted through healthy vessels. The treated vein will then turn into scar tissue, and it is absorbed by the body. Although patients will see an immediate change in the appearance of the vein, it can take several weeks for them to disappear completely.
After the procedure, compression bandages will be applied to the treated area. They apply pressure to the vein helping to close it off. While spider and varicose veins can be found anywhere on the body, they are most commonly located on the legs. When it is the legs that have been treated the patient will be instructed to walk after the treatment. This pushes the blood out of the veins that have been treated and helps to prevent complications. The treatment time varies, depending on the size of the area being treated, but generally does not take longer than 45 minutes.
The most common side effects include bruising and inflammation. Some patients may experience some discoloration of the skin because of the iron in the blood; this is rare and typically disappears in a couple of months. Your doctor at the Rendon Center will explain the potential side effects to you prior to treatment.
After treatment
When treatment concludes, most patients can drive themselves home and resume their daily activities. Although they are advised to avoid strenuous activities, light to moderate exercise is beneficial. Patients will receive detailed instructions regarding their aftercare. If there are any questions, the Rendon Center will gladly answer them.
