Top 3 Skin Conditions in Children

Whether your child picks up athlete’s foot in the school locker room or breaks out in hives every time they pet the dog, pediatric skin conditions can cause significant discomfort. Fortunately, the Rendon Center for Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine in Boca Raton, Florida offers excellent pediatric care. These are some of the top childhood skin issues we treat.

1) Childhood Eczema

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is characterized by an itchy, scaly, red, and inflamed rash. It’s one of the most common children’s skin conditions we see since it can be highly visible and uncomfortable. Eczema often develops behind the knees or inside the elbows in early childhood, but it can appear anywhere on the body.

Our friendly providers can discuss potential eczema triggers, like harsh detergents or synthetic fibers, and help you create a plan to avoid them. In addition, we’ll recommend children’s dermatology treatments like over-the-counter topical ointments. We can switch to prescription-strength oral or topical medications if those are ineffective.

2) Fungal Infections in Kids

Fungal infections are among the most common children’s skin conditions. Because it often spreads through skin-to-skin or surface-to-skin contact, gym classes, locker rooms, sleepovers, and camp bunks are ideal environments for ringworm. This fungal infection is characterized by its ring-like shape, but it can also appear on the feet or groin as athlete’s foot or jock itch.

Over-the-counter creams might be able to eliminate your child’s fungal infection, but they’re often stubborn. We can provide oral antifungal medications if the area doesn’t clear, or your child’s ringworm is in an inaccessible spot, like under the nails.

3) Hives and Allergic Skin Reactions in Children

If your child occasionally develops itchy, red welts that come on suddenly and resolve on their own, it could be hives caused by an allergic reaction. Hives can also be triggered by temperature changes or stress.

As with many kids’ skin conditions, treatments start with identifying and reducing exposure to any triggers. From there, our providers could recommend oral or topical anti-inflammatories to minimize symptoms and histamine blockers to manage allergic reactions.
