Is itchy skin a sign of skin cancer?

Skin cancer is becoming a serious concern for many Americans. In the past, many baby boomers spent hours in the sun without sun protection darkening their tans. However, we know so much more about skin care now, and the dangers of skin cancer. Now, sun protection is vital to ensuring a reduced risk of skin cancer in the future. At Rendon Center Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine, we are well aware of the increased cases of skin cancer in America today. With routine skin cancer screenings, patients can take a proactive approach towards diagnosing and treating skin cancer.

Spotting skin cancer

Many patients who visit us will find that there are certain things to look for when spotting possible cancer on the skin. This includes changing moles, new growths, or wounds that won’t scab or heal. But what about itching?

Itchy skin is a common sign of many different types of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, bug bites, dry skin, and allergic reactions. However, there are times when itching might be a sign of skin cancer. Skin cancer might irritate nerve endings found on the skin, causing an itching sensation. They are often accompanied by other symptoms as well though, including new growths or lesions, mole changes, scaly or rough skin patches, or a pearly-looking bump on the skin that easily bleeds. If any of these are caught, it may be time to make an appointment with a dermatologist for a skin cancer evaluation.

Be proactive about skin cancer

The key to recovering from skin cancer is an early diagnosis and effective treatment. Everyone should be visiting a dermatologist every year for an annual skin cancer screening. During this appointment, the dermatologist will check the entire body for signs of cancer. Any unusual or suspicious areas are removed during a biopsy to test and determine if cancer is present.
