As mentioned above, laser hair removal works best when there is a high contrast between the patient’s skin and hair color. So, avoiding the sun is essential before your appointment. That’s hard to do here in Boca, but it’s important for successfully removing more hair. Here are the things we want you to do before your laser hair removal session at our 13th Street offices:

• Avoid sun exposure: If you have a tan, let it fade before coming in for your session. As a rule, we advise patients not to have sun exposure on the areas with unwanted hair for 4-6 weeks before their session.
• Avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis: For the laser energy to get down into the follicle, the hair must be actively anchored. Plucking, waxing, and electrolysis all disturb the follicle. Shaving is fine, as it doesn’t affect hair in the follicle.
• Clean your skin: The treatment areas must be free from cosmetics, lotions and creams. This also means not applying deodorant if you are receiving treatment for your underarms.

Certain skincare products: Certain anti-aging skincare products can irritate when interacting with laser energy. These include alpha hydroxy acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and others. We’ll discuss these with you and tell you what to avoid for a few days before and after your appointment.

While the FDA has approved many different lasers for permanent hair reduction, the reality of laser hair removal is more complicated. It's virtually impossible to permanently remove hair from a treatment area largely because laser treatment can only treat hair follicles in the growth phase. If the hair is between phases or resting, then the treatment will not affect it.

The human body has about five million individual hairs, and each hair operates independently. Based on these numbers, it's not possible to fully treat every hair, even in a small treatment area.
