What is Bellafill?

Bellafill®is an extended-results injectable filler that is used primarily for smile lines and acne scars. Comprised of microspheres of bovine collagen and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Bellafill is a unique injectable that does require allergy testing prior to use. When injected into the target area, the collagen and PMMA stimulate the body to generate new collagen. This proliferation creates a scaffold of collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. Additionally, the PMMA microspheres are non-resorbable, meaning that the body will not metabolize or absorb them. This leads to extraordinarily prolonged results compared to other dermal fillers. According to clinical data, the antiaging effects of Bellafill can last up to five years. Scars may look less prominent for up to a year after Bellafill treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Bellafill?

Adults who are interested in the long-term resolution of smile lines may be good candidates for Bellafill. This product is particularly useful in the treatment of distensible rolling acne scars. These are indented scars that rise up when the skin is stretched. They are not tethered by fibrous bands. The first step in determining the merit of Bellafill is to conduct a thorough consultation and dermatologic examination. Our doctors carefully evaluate scars to determine if they will respond well to injectable treatment. Then, to receive Bellafill, one must undergo allergy testing at least two weeks prior to scheduling treatment. The skin test is usually performed on the forearm. If itching, swelling, or redness occurs at the test site, the patient is not a good candidate for Bellafill.

How is Bellafill Different from Other Dermal Fillers?

The most prominent difference between Bellafill and other soft tissue fillers is that this product has an extended lifespan. Most standard dermal fillers last from nine months to two years, depending on their formulation. Bellafill is the only product that can last up to five years for smile lines. That said, it is approved only for the correction of smile lines and acne scars. Patients who want to correct dynamic wrinkles like frown lines or signs of aging related to tissue laxity may be better suited to injectables like Botox or Dysport or dermal fillers like Juvederm.

How Long do Bellafill Treatments Take?

Bellafill treatment may occur over a series of appointments. The first appointment is reserved for consultation, examination, and allergy testing. At the second appointment, if there are no signs of potential allergy to the product, we may administer injections. Several weeks after this appointment, the patient may return for a subtle touch-up to enhance their results. Each appointment may last about half an hour.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Injectable treatments are advantageous in that they can often achieve remarkable results in a single appointment. Due to the unique way in which Bellafill works to stimulate collagen production, patients who receive this treatment may need up to three rounds of injections to achieve the desired outcome.

Are There Any Side Effects Associated with Bellafill?

Injectable treatments carry risks for minor side effects like redness, swelling, and temporary discomfort. These side effects usually resolve in a few days and, if needed, can be disguised with makeup. Some patients develop transient bruising that gradually subsides over several days. Bruising usually lasts no longer than a week. On rare occasions, Bellafill may cause side effects like persistent tissue sensitivity, redness, or swelling. There is also a very small chance that a patient may develop granulomas beneath the skin. If lumps or granulomas occur, they can be treated by the provider.
