Spider veins, also called telangiectasias, are small red, blue, and purple vessels that form around the surface of your skin. They get their name from their branching spiderweb appearance. While most adults will eventually develop spider veins during their lifetime, many patients who visit Rendon Center for Dermatology & Aesthetic Medicine choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons. If you also want to leave your spider veins behind and achieve lovely legs in 2023, our skilled providers can help.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins occur when weakened valves cause small blood vessels near your skin’s surface to expand and become visible. These typically appear on the legs or face but can develop anywhere on the body.

The following factors could increase your risk for telangiectasias:

  • Aging
  • Prolonged standing
  • Sitting with your legs crossed
  • Hormonal changes with puberty, pregnancy, or birth control pills
  • UV damage
  • Obesity
  • Genetic predisposition

You might be able to reduce your likelihood of developing spider veins by staying mobile throughout the day, wearing compression stockings, or protecting your skin from the sun. However, whether or not you develop spider veins is often out of your control.

How Can I Get Rid of Spider Veins?

Sclerotherapy is the preferred method for spider vein removal. During this non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment, our providers will inject a sclerosing agent directly into the vein. This causes the visible vein to scar, forcing the blood to reroute through healthier vessels. Treated veins will then fade for several months following your appointment. This telangiectasis treatment can require a few sessions to see your desired results.

Laser therapy is another effective spider vein treatment, especially for tiny broken capillaries on your face. During your appointment, your provider will use a device that produces laser-generated heat to destroy the blood vessel causing it to shrink and dissolve over time.
